読みました。
昭和という時代、特に戦争の時代に、どのような議論がなされ、どのような人物がそれを進めていったのか。その人となりを少しでも知ることは、私たちが今世界からどのように見られ、また、当時の日本人がどのように世界を捉えていたのかを知る上で非常に重要だと思います。
この本では、東條英機、石原莞爾、瀬島龍三、吉田茂が代表的人物として記述されています。私にとって特に印象深かったのは東條英機でした。東條について、特に知識はなく、単に戦争を主導した張本人という程度での理解でした。東條がどのような人間で、どのような思考でもって戦争を決意したのか、そしてそれを遂行したのか、については全く知りませんでした。この本の中でもっとも端的に東條を説明しているのは、「精神論が好き」「妥協は敗北」「事実誤認は当たり前」という言葉、また、東條は、一般の啓蒙書、文学書、政治書といったものを読むことはなく、むしろそういったことを揶揄するような人物であったそうです。また、感情的に物事を決めてしまう性質もあったと書かれています。
では、なぜ、そのような人物が首相になったのか。詳細は省きますが、戦争をしない決断をできる人間は東條以外にいない、という一種の賭けでの人事だったようなのです。日本という国はこの人事に負けてしまったのでした。そこから、日本は理念のない戦争へ突き進むことになりました。
東條という人物を掘り下げてみれば見るほど、そこには空虚な人物像が浮き彫りになっていきました。そして、ある意味で、この人物を選択した、という点に当時の日本の問題が集約されていると感じました。
This book is about Showa era, especially world war period. It describes well about what discussion was going on and what person made decisions. Knowing a bit more about what the important persons in the era looked like would be quite useful in knowing how people all over the world view us and how Japanese people at the time looked at the world.
This book focuses on four people: Hideki Tojo, Kanji Ishihara, Ryuzo Takishima, and Shigeru Yoshida.
Who intersted me was Hideki Tojo. Honestly I had very little knowledge about him; I just knew he was a man leading the beginning of the war. I didn't know how his personality was, how he made a decision regarging warfare as well as how he executed his decision.
However, this book depicted him with the word 'mentalism', 'compromise as defeat' 'rejecting facts'. In addition, he didn't read any books such as literature, enlightment, and politics. Rather he hated them. Also, he was very emotional, not rational.
Here comes a question: Why Japan selected him as a leader despite knowing his personality that was not suitable for a leader. I can not go into the detail, but according to the book, he was selected as a result of gamlbled personnel. Japan losed the gamble, which led to the war without vision.
To look into him in depth, we will clearly know how empty he was and i had a sense that the problem of Japan was the process of selecting him.
